You are here: Accessibility |
We recognise our responsibilities and obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act and are working to provide the best possible service to all.The site's layout takes into account users who are blind or visually impaired. If you have difficulties using a mouse, the site can be navigated using only a keyboard. Below are some of the measures we have taken to ensure the accessibility of this website.
You can use these swatches to select text and background colours for the site. (You won't be able to select text in the same colour as the background!) Note that if Javascript is disabled on your browser, this feature will not be available, and if Cookies are disabled functionality will be limited.

The changes to will last for only this session (i.e. until you close the browser window), or you restore the default scheme .
If you want them to be more permanent, and you haven't disabled Cookies, they can be saved for future visits to our site from this computer, or until you elect to go back to default values .
Access Keys
Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the web site.
The following access keys are defined by the UK Government access keys standard. Not all are appropriate to this site; those that are implemented are suffixed [*]:
- S Skip navigation [*]
- 1 Home page [*]
- 2 What's new page [*]
- 3 Our site map [*]
- 4 Search our site [*] - but see the comments on the 'Search' page.
- 5 Frequently asked questions [*]
- 6 Help
- 7 Complaints procedure
- 8 Our terms and conditions
- 9 Feedback
- 0 Link to page with keyboard access information (this page) [*]
- C How to contact us [*]
- E EasyAccess pages
- O Details of our organisation
Access Keys are invoked by a browser and platform-specific method.
On Microsoft Windows
If you use Internet Explorer version 4, Firefox version 1, Mozilla or Netscape Navigator version 6 or later, hold down the ALT key and press the relevant access key (ALT + access key).
On Firefox version 2, hold down the SHIFT key, the ALT key and press the relevant access key (SHIFT + ALT + access key) - but see the Note below.
If you use Internet Explorer version 5 or later you then need to follow the same instructions as above, but press ENTER to follow the link.
NOTE for Firefox version 2 Users:
Firefox 2.0 uses Shift+Alt as the keystroke combination to invoke access keys. On the surface, this appears to be a good idea, as it avoids clashing with the shortcut keys used by the browser. Unfortunately, the new behaviour does not work with numeric access keys.
NOTE for Netscape Users
With effect from 1st February 2008, AOL (the owners of Netscape Communications Corporation) will no longer support any version of Netscape. Users are advised by AOL to move to another browser, as any seurity loopholes in Netscape will not be fixed.
On Macintosh OS X
If you use Safari version 1.2 or later, Firefox, Mozilla or Internet Explorer version 5 or later, hold down CTRL and press the relevant access key.
Opera on Windows and Macintosh OS X
Hold down the SHIFT key and press ESC, release these keys, then press the access key to follow the link (SHIFT + ESC, access key).
If you have any difficulty in reading the content of the site in its default design, you may like to try changing the underlying style to the alternatives we provide.
Display the site in text only: This style removes all images from the page. This view is suited to PDAs and mobile devices.
Please also refer to the Colour and Font Size information above.
You may continue to change the text size using your chosen browser's controls, or by using the “A” buttons at the top of the page. Also, to get full benefit from the accessibility features and certain other facilities, such as "Site Search" you must have Javascript enabled.
All the most popular browsers allow text on the website to be displayed larger or smaller, depending on user preference or need.
On Microsoft Windows
If you use Firefox, Mozilla or Netscape Navigator version 6 or later, change the text size by holding down the CTRL key and press the plus key (CTRL + plus) or minus key (CTRL + minus) to increase or decrease the text size respectively.
If you use Internet Explorer, on the menu bar choose View > Text Size and then the desired size from the list.
On Macintosh OS X
In all the most popular browsers, excluding Opera, hold down the Command key and press the plus (CMD + plus) or minus (CMD + minus) key to increase or decrease the text size respectively.
In Opera on Windows and Macintosh OS X
Unlike other browsers, Opera uses a 'page zoom' feature to magnify text and images on a web page. To choose a different zoom level, from Opera's menu bar choose View > Zoom and then the percent of magnification you desire.
All non-decorative images contain descriptive 'alt' attributes (these are descriptions of images that are displayed as a text tag when you hold your mouse pointer over an image). These descriptive text tags work better when you are using Internet Explorer.
If this option is selected from the bottom of any page, a new window opens which contains the same information as the parent page, but rendered in black on white, in a serif font, with ornamental images removed. If this functionality is not suitable, then you still have the option of printing the parent page from your browser's 'print' option.
We are working to make this website accessible to all. If there is an area you are having difficulty accessing or if you have any suggestions as to how we can improve the accessibility of this website, please let us know by sending an email to webmaster@boroughbridge-high.n-yorks.sch.uk .
